About this Course
Aims and Outcomes
The Green Skills Research and Planning course forms part of the Green Skills program (funded by the Green Fund) and aims to establish and support a network of organisations and individuals working on green skills matters by:
- sharing green skills research and planning methods and lessons;
- coordinating green skills research, policy inputs and interventions;
- building capacity in participating individuals and organisations.
The intended outcomes are to:
- understand current practice in green skills planning, research, policy and practice internationally and in South Africa;
- evaluate and apply different methods for anticipating and studying green skills needs; and
- incorporating them into organisational and sector plans.
The above will be located within national, sectoral, provincial, local and workplace/community contexts. Participants will be guided in developing outputs needed by their organisations.
Modality and Venue
Three contact sessions will be held; all are compulsory. The contact sessions for engaging face to face with presenters, facilitators and other practitioners, will be complemented with online resources, forums, practical and conceptual assignments and feedback from experienced tutors. The contact sessions take place at Wits University School of Education, Johannesburg.
Costs and Accreditation
This first course is funded by the Green Fund (DEA through DBSA) and there is no registration fee. Participants or their employers would be responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs. The host universities will seek accreditation for those who successfully complete the short course. Applications for the 2017 course are now closed. 25 Applicants have been accepted.
Meet the Facilitators

Eureta Rosenberg
Course Facilitator
In 2016 Eureta Rosenberg returned to academia after 15 years in private practice, where she supported government and NGOs with research, evaluation and strategic planning in environment and sustainability education, training and capacity development. As academic Professor Rosenberg holds the Murray and Roberts Chair of Environment and Sustainability Education at Rhodes University, where she graduated in 1995. Her doctoral topic, research methodology for transformation, remains a focus in her post-graduate teaching. As a consultant Eureta developed the National Biodiversity Human Capital Development Strategy, and contributed systemic studies on quality and relevance to the National Environmental Skills Plan. She is active in the National Skills Planning Forum and is co-coordinator of the Green Skills program and course.

Presha Ramsarup
Course Facilitator
Presha Ramsarup’s recent PhD work which focused on Green Skill learning pathways, aimed to investigate the nature of learning pathways for sustainable development and a green economy in South Africa and thus lay at the nexus of two important areas for development, policy, and education namely, work and learning and sustainable development. Having been a researcher for the South African Environmental Sector Skills Plan and an active member of the National Environmental Skills Planning Forum, she has been playing both a co-ordination and advocacy role for Green skills research in South Africa. She has previously served a technical advisor to both provincial and national government to support the development of environmental and sustainability education within South Africa’s education and training transformation process. She is currently actively involved in programme co-ordination of the National Green Skills Project, which is a partnership between Wits and Rhodes universities.

Daryl Mclean
Course Facilitator
Daryl Mclean has more than 20 years’ experience in working with Sector Education and Training Authorities, quality assurance bodies, providers and workplaces on all aspects of skills development. This includes establishing SETA ETQA systems, evaluating sector skills plans and developing learnership frameworks. He has trained representatives from more than 1000 companies and 400 education/training providers across all industries in skills planning; design of programs; Human Resource Development; design of quality systems; and program evaluation. He was deeply involved in the development of South Africa’s skills system including the competency framework used for the National Qualifications Framework. His recent strategic experience includes being Chief Director: Strategic Support in the Department of Public Service and Administration (2016) and COO of the Public Sector Education and Training Authority (2015-2016).
